Steam turbine-driven pumps and compressors are common industrial applications.
Working Principle of Steam Turbine-Driven Pumps
The principle of steam turbine-driven pumps is to convert the thermal energy of steam into mechanical energy using a steam turbine, which then drives the pump to operate. The working process of the steam turbine is as follows:
Energy Conversion: Steam with a certain pressure and temperature enters the turbine nozzle, expands and accelerates in the nozzle, converting thermal energy into kinetic energy and forming a high-speed steam flow. The high-speed steam flow enters the moving blade channel, pushing the moving blades and the rotor to rotate, converting kinetic energy into mechanical energy.
Driving the Pump: The rotor of the steam turbine is connected to the pump through a coupling, and the mechanical energy generated by the steam turbine is transmitted to the pump, causing the pump's impeller to rotate and thus achieving fluid transportation.
Applications of Steam Turbine-Driven Pumps
Power Plants: They are used to drive feedwater pumps, transporting water to the boiler and increasing the feedwater pressure. Using steam turbines to drive feedwater pumps can reduce the steam volume at the last stage of the main turbine, lower the plant's electricity consumption, and improve the internal efficiency of the main turbine.
Industrial Fields: In industries such as chemical engineering and petroleum, they are used to drive various process pumps to meet the fluid transportation needs in the production process.
Working Principle of Steam Turbine-Driven Compressors
The principle of steam turbine-driven compressors is similar to that of steam turbine-driven pumps. It also utilizes a steam turbine to convert the thermal energy of steam into mechanical energy, driving the compressor impeller to rotate:
Energy Conversion: Steam expands and accelerates in the turbine nozzle, converting thermal energy into kinetic energy and forming a high-speed steam flow. The high-speed steam flow enters the moving blade channel, pushing the moving blades and the rotor to rotate, converting kinetic energy into mechanical energy.
Driving the Compressor: The rotor of the steam turbine is connected to the compressor through a coupling, transmitting mechanical energy to the compressor impeller. When the impeller rotates, the gas is compressed under the action of centrifugal force, thereby increasing the gas pressure.
Applications of Steam Turbine-Driven Compressors
Chemical Industry: They are used to drive centrifugal compressors to compress chemical media. Centrifugal compressors have a simple and compact structure, operate smoothly, and are suitable for direct drive by industrial steam turbines.
Refrigeration Industry: They are used to drive refrigeration compressors to achieve the compression cycle of refrigerants.
Central Heating Systems: In the heat network pump system, steam turbines drive heat network pumps to transport hot water to central heating stations.
Steam turbine-driven pumps and compressors have extensive applications in the industrial field. By rationally utilizing the thermal energy of steam, they achieve efficient power conversion and fluid transportation or compression, providing reliable power support for industrial production.
